A tunnel on a diet: Work on the Alex tunnel is progressing.
Those who want to go west from Alexanderplatz will find themselves facing Rathausstraße directly in front of a pink and yellow building fence. Large-scale posters provide information about the extensive building site and the surrounding cafés, restaurants and shops. But what happens behind the construction fence? Between the Alexanderplatz S-Bahn station and the Rotes Rathaus, the next construction phase of the so-called "lightening", the reduction of the load on the tunnel, has begun above the Alex Tunnel.
Even in the current situation - keyword corona virus - work is currently underway: The individual massive concrete and asphalt layers are being removed in layers with several excavators and transported from the construction site by trucks. This is done via the site access road in Spandauer Strasse. At the same time, coordinated measures to secure and relocate the lines are being carried out by the media carriers.
The installation of the foam glass ballast is expected to start at the end of the month. In addition, the prerequisites for the greening of Rathausstraße will be created: New planting trenches for the planting of trees will be built. Afterwards, the surface will be created in such a way that the planned tram route can also run over it.
Over the next weeks and months, the construction site will be gradually dismantled from east to west. The overall measure is scheduled for completion in November 2020. By then, the load on the tunnel will have been reduced by approx. 7,000 tonnes and will be safe for the passage of the new U5 underground line.
